The upcoming total solar eclipse, scheduled to take place on April 8, 2024, will grace the skies of Mexico, the United States, and Canada. As per The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), disruptions in air travel, from 6:00 am on April 7, 2024, to midnight on April 10 are being projected. A potential surge in air travel is expected, especially with spring break coinciding with the eclipse.

Directives and guidance by The FAA to private and commercial pilots are being offered to ensure their preparedness for flying during the eclipse. Major issues anticipated include an increased number of drones and aircraft, limited parking at a few airports, and potential delays.

Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Key details and effects on air travel

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, fully obstructing the sun. The last visible total solar eclipse in the US was in 2017. Being a rare phenomenon, the total solar eclipse of 2024 and its effects are expected to garner a lot of attention. A large number of tourists are planning to fly to various states in the US from where the eclipse is supposed to be the most visible, including New England and Texas. As per The FAA reports, airports at these destinations are likely to be most affected.

Some passengers are even planning to take flights that coincide with the eclipse on April 8. Travellers are being advised to verify flight statuses before leaving their homes, although flight cancellations are expected to be infrequent.

For those hoping to enjoy the view, remember looking directly at a solar eclipse is unsafe. Specialised eye protection should be worn before enjoying the celestial spectacle.
